Our Story
Northland Trenching Equipment, Inc. was founded in 1984 by Larry Neid of Waseca, Minnesota. The corporate headquarters is located in Waseca, Minnesota. At the start, the company was a dealer for German made HOES trenchers and plows for Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin. The U.S. distributor headquarters was located in Atwood, Illinois. Northland was also a dealer for CLS laser grade controls, as well as several short line complimentary products. In 1983, the HOES company in Germany sold out to Dynapac and new trenching machines came to the U.S. called Dynapac/HOES. At about this same time, Northland became a dealer for LaserPlane grade controls, today known as Trimble. In 1988, Northland was able to purchase the U.S. distribution rights along with the parts and machinery inventory located in Illinois. That inventory was then moved to the Waseca location and it became the U.S. distributor for Dynapac trenchers and plows. In 1996, an agreement was reached with Inter-Drain of Tiel, Holland to sell their famous brand of equipment. These machines quickly became the brand of choice with buyers and the customer base grew to all parts of the U.S., as well asother parts of the world. In 1998, Northland bought out United Parts Service of Arthur, Illinois and that location became store number two. This store was followed by a parts depot and sales yard in Belle Plaine, Iowa and then by a sales office and parts depot in Daytona, Florida. In 2008, a decision based on geographical location of customer base and a depressed Florida market led Northland to consolidate the Arthur store and Daytona store to a more centralized location in Indiana. A larger modern shop and office building plus a large equipment lot was attained in Brazil, Indiana, just off interstate 70. In 2012, Larry Neid sold the business to his daughter Amy Atherton and his son Corey Neid. They have restructured the company as an equal partner LLC, named Northland Trenching Equipment, LLC and remain the current owners today. Amy & Corey have since bought out Great Lakes Inter-Drain and remain the only Inter-Drain dealer in North America. In addition, Northland has added a full fabrication shop on site and continues to operate out of Waseca, MN and Brazil, IN.
